We have met some amazing people on our journeys and we wanted to share some of them with you.  If you have anyone you would like to add then please let us know.

There is so much information out there that it can be so consuming, and some jardon that I'd never heard before so thought we'd pop it down.  Please feel to email and let us know what to add.

Helpful Ideas

We found some awesome things to help our children with scoli, including sitting pads, sleeping aids etc, please feel free to let us know any others.

There are some great practices out there that can assist including the Schroth method of physiotherapy to yoga & pilates.

Some great links to websites we've found to be really useful.  Please let us know some more to add from your experiences.

Some families do not have the luxury of trying alternatives and surgery is the only option.  Here we've tried to reflect a couple of surgery options.

The early recognition test at home

 

There is an online application called ScoliScreen that may assist with the diagnosis:   http://app.scoliscreen.com

 

Normal posture, standing

 

  • Are the shoulders even?

  • Is the head in a straight line with the natal cleft?

  • Are the shoulder blades symmetrical and at the same height, or is one higher than the other?

  • Is one side of the pelvis higher than the other?

  • Is the distance between the waist and the arm (arms hanging at sides) the same on each side?

  • Is the waist symmetrical?

  • Is your child leaning to one side?

Leaning forward

 

  • The child stands with his legs straight and his hands clasped below his knees.

  • Can you detect any asymmetry (a hump) in the thoracic region (ribs and shoulder blades)?

  • Can you detect any asymmetry in the waist or pelvis (higher on one side than the other)

The document attached above; Navigating Your Journey - 2010 - although dated in some of the physical therapy results, is fantastic for an understanding of the entire journey that families go through.
